CAN YOU GET YOUR KIDS TO EAT MICROGREENS?

Can You Get Your Kids to Eat Microgreens? One of the more aggravating things one can experience as a parent is picky children. But we have to remember that all of us were kids at one time and “didn’t want to eat our vegetables.” So when people ask us how to get their kids to eat microgreens, we have a couple of tricks up our sleeves that you can try.

Microgreens can be added subtly to a child’s diet in a way that can go unnoticed or be spun to be “fun.” Introducing microgreens to a child’s diet can improve their health!

Here are our favorite methods to getting kids to eat microgreens…

PIZZA TOPPINGS

For greater success we suggest starting out with “sweeter” microgreens because they are easier on the ole palate. Have a “build your own” pizza night with your kids and include micros like basil. You can make it fun by explaining to them that this is their favorite Nintendo characters Mario and Luigi’s favorite topping for their pizza.

Let them smell it first and explain to them how putting basil on their pizza will make them super strong and healthy.

SECRETLY PUT IT INTO THEIR FOODS

If you have a really picky child no matter who you tell them likes microgreens or how strong and cool it will make them, they still may not want to eat them. You may have to trick them into eating microgreens instead.

Simple meals like omelets or a stir fry are an easy way to chop up the microgreens small enough that they won’t even realize they’re in there. You could also blend them up in a fruit smoothie. The overpowering fruit flavor will disguise the microgreens. It’s a win/win too because your child will be consuming microgreens and you didn’t even have to fight them on it!

IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER…

Whether your child is picky or not it’s important to follow certain guidelines when growing your own microgreens to feed to your child.

Make sure you grow your micros in medium soil in a clean damp-free space in order to avoid harmful fungi and bacteria. When harvesting, cut your micros a few centimeters from the root – as consuming the root could be dangerous.

And as weird as it sounds, don’t overfeed your child microgreens. The daily vegetable intake a child should be ingesting is 10%-15% of what they eat. Try to keep their microgreen intake to ½ cup and under daily. Feeding them more than that could cause an upset stomach and diarrhea.

MICROGREENS WE SUGGEST TRYING FIRST:

Arugula | It is a microgreen that contains minerals like calcium and potassium, which can keep your children’s bones strong and healthy. The high levels of antioxidants in arugula reduces inflammation and stomach acidity.

Broccoli | It contains many minerals (potassium, calcium, and zinc amongst others) and vitamins. These minerals improve bone development and regulate hormones. Adding small portions of broccoli to the diet of your children will give them strong bones.

Kale | It contains antioxidants that help the body eliminate free radicals, i.e., unstable waste molecules. The build-up of these free radicals is toxic to the body system as it can lead to cellular damage. To increase their metabolic rate, add vegetables such as kale rich in antioxidant contents to your child’s diet. Doing this will help eliminate the toxic waste in their body.

Lettuce | This microgreen contains nine times more minerals than mature lettuce. It is rich in nutrients and vitamins .It contains antioxidants that reduce inflammation.

Red cabbage | This microgreen contains 40 times more vitamin E than its mature counterpart. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that helps regulate the cellular activities of the body. Red cabbage also contains Vitamin C, which is essential for the repair and growth of tissues. Your children will have an immune-boost and proper brain functioning when you add this microgreen to their diet.

Sunflower | Sunflower microgreens have a sweet, nutty flavor that your children will love. They are rich in nutrients and vitamins (A, B, C, D, and E). Sunflower is low in calories, and it is excellent for maintaining a healthy weight for your children. Sunflower microgreens are excellent protein sources, which helps repair body tissues.
